Nicola O’Rourke, BSc Physiotherapy (Hons), MSc in Gerontology and Neurology (Hons), MISCP
When I graduated with an honour’s BSc degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Manchester and gained extensive clinical experience I then completed an MSc in Gerontology and Neurology in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2012. I am also a Chartered Physiotherapist and Member of the ISCP.
After my primary degree I gained valuable experience working in the UK in many different fields including neurological rehabilitation, orthopaedic rehabilitation and with musculoskeletal hospital outpatients.
On returning to Ireland, I worked extensively in private practice treating musculoskeletal injuries, sports injuries, chronic pain, neurological conditions and care of the elderly.
Throughout my years of experience in private practice and sports physiotherapy I developed a keen interest and understanding of the role of biomechanics in the treatment of recurring injuries. I subsequently completed courses in Lower Limb Biomechanical Assessment and Treatment and have worked extensively in the area of biomechanics and orthotic prescribing.
While working in private practice has allowed me to refine my manual therapy skills, it has also highlighted how essential it is to incorporate biomechanical assessment, where appropriate, for long term recovery and the prevention of persistent recurring issues.
In addition, I have undertaken numerous post graduate courses in hydrotherapy and have used hydrotherapy as a rehabilitation tool with patients of all age groups, from young children through to the older person. Furthermore, I have completed many accredited post-graduate training courses and have successfully completed a certificate in dry needling.
As a qualified Manual Handling instructor, I use this knowledge to educate and treat my patients with back and neck pain, precipitated by the demands of prolonged sitting in a poor ergonomic position or posture and other work-related injury.
I am a keen sportsperson and have played Gaelic football and camogie for Cavan. In addition, I have worked as team physiotherapist with many clubs and inter-county teams in Dublin and Cavan and rugby teams in the UK.
